Acer campestre 'Royal Ruby'

.
.
Common name: Royal Ruby hedge maple
Family: Aceraceae (maple family)
Distribution: Species native to Europe, n. Africa and w. Asia
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: This deciduous, shrubby tree vigorously grows 12-15' tall and nearly as wide. Young leaves in spring are purple becoming dark green by midsummer. Flowers are insignificant. One-inch-long, brilliantly red, winged fruits (samaras) occur opposite one another and is the reason for the selection's name. The new foliage makes a fine show when featured as a clipped specimen or screen.
