Comments: A large deciduous shrub, growing up to 20', that has coarsely double-toothed, oval leaves. Bark is peeling and has distinct lenticels. The fruit are nuts completely enclosed in a beaked husk, in clusters of 2-4. The husk is red on the outside and completely covered by dense, white bristly hairs. Fall color is minimal. The nuts are relished by wildlife.
