Pinus nigra - Austrian pine
.
Common name: Austrian pine
Family: Pinaceae (pine family)
Distribution: Europe
IUCN Red list: Least concern
Hardiness: USDA Zone 3
Life form: Evergreen tree
Comments: A stiff needled evergreen to 50' in height with a spread generally half that. Dense and conical in youth, in old age becomes flat-topped. Bark is attractive, rough grayish brown or dark brown. Adaptable, widely used along roads due to its ability to resist road salt damage. In recent years a tip blight problem has caused significant dieback. Moist soil is best but it will handle drought and heat better than most pines. Plant in full sun.
