Taxon

Platanus orientalis

.
.
Common name: oriental planetree
Family: Platanaceae (planetree family)
Distribution: s.e. Europe and s.w. Asia
IUCN Red list: Data deficient
Hardiness: USDA Zone 6
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: A rare tree in the U. S. with old specimens treasured for their uniquely mottled, cream and gray bark. Grows 30-40' tall and 20' wide. Deciduous leaves are alternate, medium green. Globose fruits mature in October, in clusters of 3-6. Resistant to Anthracnose, a major problem on other species. Literature says this species is not particularly hardy, however, a specimen grew at The Arboretum for 30 years, from which this plant was produced. Plant in full sun to light shade in moist, well-drained, rich soil but this tree is quite adaptable even to pH.
