Comments: This species produces the largest fruit of any plant native to the United States. It is a deciduous, small, understory tree that, in some instances, can grow to 30' tall. Its large simple leaves have a disagreeable odor when bruised. Flowers are dark maroon, produced in late April to early May and, smelling like overly ripe fruit, are attractive to flies and bats. The fruit is a 3-5" long, yellow-green, lumpy berry with a taste some think is similar to banana. Bark is smooth and brown.
