Comments: Ashe’s magnolia is a spreading deciduous shrub or small tree that can grow to about 25 ft. tall with a broad, round crown. It is closely related to bigleaf magnolia (Magnolia macrophylla) and has similarly large light-green leaves that may be 2-3 feet long to a foot wide. The leaves are wider near the tip than at the stem, green on the upper surface and whitish beneath. The flowers bloom at the end of stout stems in May/June and are fragrant with a jasmine or citrus scent. The fruits are reddish and cylindrical producing bright red fleshy seeds in early August. This species is named for its discoverer, William Willard Ashe, who was a pioneer forester for the United States Forest Service. It is endemic to only a few bluffs in the Florida Panhandle.
